Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to order john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered 3rd-level names remained working.
